Initially known as "Liqueur de Santé," its remarkable popularity led Father Garnier, who oversaw liqueur production at the time, to officially rename it "Chartreuse Verte" and register the Chartreuse trademark in 1852.
Today, this iconic herbal liqueur continues to be crafted exclusively by the Carthusian monks at their Aiguenoire Distillery in Entre-Deux-Guiers, France, preserving a centuries-old tradition and the closely guarded recipe that has made Chartreuse renowned worldwide.
