Laphroaig's 200th anniversary celebrations in 2015 lead up to this extraordinary bottling of rare single malt Scotch whisky from Islay. Exclusively first-fill Oloroso Sherry cask were used to mature this spirit for 32 years, Laphroaig only producing 5,880 bottles in this limited release.
The nose has some toffee with dark dried fruit and light notes of spice, along with the ever present Laphroaig peat, saline/iodine with the phenol/cresol aromas Laphroaig fans love. On the palate there is hazelnuts, toffee, peat, dried fruit, a warm sweetness, and char with light notes of roasted malt, cocoa and bit metallic. A long finish with layers of peat, toffee, dried fruit, mint, tannic dryness will linger pleasantly.
Round full body, thick oily mouth feel, an extremely well balanced dram. The Laphroaig 32 is a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, surly and rugged with a calm and gentle side. This intense whisky is the result of being left for an extremely long aging in Oloroso sherry casks, almost forgotten in a quiet part of the warehouse. Comparing this dram to the Laphroaig 18, it is amazing that the the peat wasn't lost to the wood.
The Laphroaig 32 is a rugged and fearsome Scot with a sophisticated and kindly side, wild and unrestrained one moment, nurturing and calming the next, a admirable achievement by Laphroaig at being on its best behavior.
